Notes from class on concepts expected for extended response questions:

These are not meant to be "the answers"! They are an overview of the main concepts that should be included in your responses. YOU have to put them into paragraph form. You may (of course) include diagrams to help describe the ideas that you are trying to get across. Remember that you are writing this as though the reader know nothing about the subject you are addressing.
1.      50m x100m study area 10 crabs in 1m2 sample
calculate the number of sq. m in the beach then multiply by the number of crabs in the 1 m2 sample

population study method= sampling besure to say what sampling is and how it works

say how you could be more accurate why it would it be more accurate

2. In any compare/contrast question you should state what the items being compared/contrasted are and then:
compare- how are they similar
contrast- state how they are different
3. Refer to diagram below. Remember that energy from the sun is "converted" electromagenetic energy in the form of wavelengths of light to chemical energy in the form of glucose by the producers.

Glucose is stored in the body tissues of the plant! Some of that energy will be stored in the body tissues of the heterotrophs (primary, secondary and tertiary consumers)

Most of the energy gained by an organism, from what ever source, is used by the organism to perform life process such as building proteins, general body maintainence, elimination of wastes etc.

4 & 5. This diagram is from our reading on Photosynthesis "Let the Sunshine in!"
Energy from sun to plant:

Electromagnetic energy in the form of wavelengths of light-->light absorbed in chloroplast of plant cell used to run photosynthesis-->glucose (sugar) light energy "converted" to chemical energy

Energy from plant to animal:

Eat -->Digest--> glucose--> Mitochondria --> respiration -->converted from glucose-->atp + electromagnetic energy (thermal infra red-(heat))

Animal to animal:

Eat animal-->Digest-->chemical energy from body tissue--> glucose (chemical) -->mitochondria àatp + electromagnetic energy (thermal infra red-(heat))
