Earth, Moon and Sun Short Essay questions.

Write a short essay describing the following topics. Be sure to use complete sentences and good paragraph form. On the test you will be assigned two of the following topics to address. You may write your responses out in advance, but during the test you may only use ONE of the prepared essays from your notebook. The other one you will have to write out during the test.
A. Describe the difference between the time it takes the Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun and the Calendar year. What can we do to make up for this lost time? What would happen is we did not account for this difference?
B. Describe three theories for the origin of the moon that were presented in the book. Be sure to describe them thoroughly. Give evidence for the theories when available. Which of them is most likely? Which is least likely? (according to what we studied in class)
C. The average distance to the moon is 384,403 Km. Describe how we can know this distance so accurately.
D. Use an example to explain why the high tide occurs approximately 50 minutes later each day?
E. Describe at least three main factors that must all occur at the same time for an eclipse to occur.
F. Explain why tides occur. What factors influence the tides? How many high tides and low tides occur each day? Where on Earth do they occur? What is the relationship of the phases of the moon to the tides?
